Church-based Youth and Children’s Worker

JOB DESCRIPTION
Location:
Aim: To nurture the faith of young people leading to lifelong commitment, primarily by:
a) Co-ordinating and developing the children and young people’s work
b) Developing the team of volunteers who work with children and young people
Accountable to: The Church Meeting, with day-to- day responsibility to The Minister
1. To co-ordinate and develop the children’s and young people's work within the Grove Centre Church
2. To establish a regular youth group for secondary age young people already connected with the church including occasional trips and residential activities. Note – the most convenient time for a regular group for our young people would be Sunday afternoon/evening, (initially monthly with plan to become more frequent over time).
3.To nurture the faith of young people, including teaching, encouraging and facilitating prayer and Bible study, and to act as a Christian role model.
4.To support and encourage those already working with children and young people in the church, and inspire and encourage new volunteers from within the congregation and youth group to assist in
5.To facilitate and encourage training of volunteers assisting in the above.
6.To contribute to and support the Junior Church in being involved in Church services e.g. through music and drama
7.To maintain administration records, act in accordance with relevant legislation, in particular Health & Safety, Child Protection and Data Protection legislation and as appropriate liase with church Child Protection Officers
8.To attend Deacons meetings and lead
9.To liase with existing Church and Grove Centre children’s groups to improve awareness of and to encourage involvement in the activities available to them within the young peoples work at the Church
10.To keep up to date with current issues for young people and bring forward relevant issues to the Minister and Deacons as appropriate.
11.To develop contacts with agencies dealing with children in the wider community and the parent denominations. N.B. the job will entail giving a proportion of time to support youth and children’s work in the wider URC
12 The job will entail working on Sundays and some evenings, which will be included in working hours. It will be expected that the post-holder will attend at least 2 Sunday services a month.
13 It is expected that the post-holder will be involved in preparation for children and Youth participation in major church Festivals (Mothering Sunday, Easter, Harvest, Christmas) and therefore personally present at most of these, except as agreed with supervisor.
14 To undergo professional development and training as appropriate
OTHER REQUIREMENTS
To be aware of the Vision Statement, as agreed by the Church, and develop the programme of activity, involvement and development around this vision.
To ensure that Health and Safety policies and procedures are implemented at all times and to raise any concerns regarding their operation or any other health and safety matters with the Minister.
