3rd Sunday in Advent

Sunday, 20 December 10:30am (Online)

4th Sunday in Advent - Nativity service

Please join us for what should be a fun filled all-age service with plenty of carol singing, and we hope as many of you as possible will dress up. This year it’s a new creative challenge to see what kind of costume you can create at home. Could you make a mask? A Halo? Donkey ears? Crown? Maybe you want to make more than one and switch characters as we go along.

You’re not restricted by what costume you pick at the start of the service, so go wild! But if you’re not feeling creative, you can never go wrong with a trusty tea towel!

Those who really don’t want to dress up are just as welcome.

Longest Night Service

This service takes place on the evening of the longest night according to the calendar, the winter Equinox. From the 22nd December, the days begin getting longer once more, even if we won’t feel the difference for some time.

Traditionally, a Longest Night service acknowledges that Christmas can be a difficult season for some people. It’s not all tinsel, presents, and relentless cheerfulness, but can be a time of great darkness. That’s why it’s also sometimes called a ‘Blue Christmas’ service.

2020 has been an exceptionally difficult year for many people, so this service may be of some comfort. It will give us an opportunity to recognise the grieving of expectations for this year, loved ones, time lost, and hopes that evaporated in a cloud of pandemic. As well as acknowledging the hurt, we remember that in Christ, a light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. Hope is inherent to our faith, because difficult times always come around, and we hope and trust in God that his promises to us are real and enduring.

So on the darkest and longest night of the year, we can offer the pain of the last few months to God, and reaffirm our trust that in God “All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.” (Julian of Norwich.)
